There's a problem?

I didn't notice any real major problems with the tourism. Of course there is always room for improvement, anywhere.

From what I observed you already pull a large part of the Saudi market, and a fair amount of folks from down under.

For Europeans and Americans, there needs to be more marketing. Malaysia is going head to head with Bangkok and Singapore, and these two are very well established locations.

As a rule Europeans and Americans don't know that much about your country. Good educational ads would do wonders for the market. You have several issues to deal with. First that the population doesn't live in trees, second that your country is poor and dirty, and most of all the word 'Islamic'. While 60% of the county is Muslim, 40% is an assortment of other religions. The stereotyping of an Islamic county, does hinder a bit.

On a internal side of things, it's going to take a lot of educational work with the locals. I know some has started, but the locals are going to have to take ownership of the problem... Malaysian drivers are some of the rudest people on the road. Scooters weave through traffic cutting off cars, no one appears to understand what a lane is and the list goes on!

The western toilet (lack of) is being addressed, but still has a way to go. Western women, especially more mature ones, just don't do pits with water hoses very well!

Taxis!!!!. Who needs to go to Gentling Highlands to gamble, just try to get a fair price with a cab. People don't mind paying, but no one likes to be ripped off.

Of course, I like Malaysia, even with it's little quarks.

The perennial problem with Malaysian tourism have always been deeply rooted at government level. Each time a new minister takes over the tourism, culture & art portfolio, everything changes according to his/her ignorant demands and wishful thinking... and this result in inconsistencies and third-rate communications to the world over the decades. "Truly Asia?" - i doubt it!

In the days where the TDC - Tourist Development Board was headed by Abdullah Jonid the Secretary General, Malaysia's tourism peaked because he knows, he really knows how to market the country; but fell out of favour just because the incoming new minister has his own team - they know next to nothing about tourism, world geography, demography of people, whatever...

Do you work for the govt or something? All your Qs seem to be so... like an undercover survey guy trying to find out what exactly people have to say about Malaysia...

& be specific about your Q, please. What problem? Lack of tourism? Too much of it? What?

:o)
