try 'decet hodie mori' ('today would be a suitable day to die')

'nosce te ipsum' is ok for 'know yourself' but 'nosce temet' would be a more natural way of putting this.

actual romans would probably not have said either, since they had a catchphrase 'gnothi seauton' to express the idea.

'gnothi seauton' is actually greek, but it was a phrase most romans knew.

you get the same thing in english with words like 'coup de grace', 'schadenfreude', 'pizzeria', or 'putz'.
