sicolvin is right. its mildew. rent a rug doctor from a grocery store and clean the carpet with it real good. it should take the stink out.

if this were to happen again, suck all the water out with a shop vac---it sounds like you did this. open any windows in the room and leave them open. set up two or three box fans on the floor and leave them on day and nite for a week or so---or at least until the carpet is dry. if you do this the fans will continue to evaporate moisture out of the carpet and it should dry out and not smell bad. good luck!

The reason your carpet stinks is because the pad under it is still wet. The carpet is dry but the fibers trap the water below in the pad. Get a real good velocity fan and blow it across the floor. This will allow the pad to dry out. Smell should be gone in about 2-3 days. Keep an eye out for dark spots on the baseboards. This will tell you if you have mold.

mildew hun... or some of the dirty water left residue... like dirt and laundry detergent... you need to call a professional carpet cleaner... If by chance you live in hawaii on oahu... the best to call is MGM Services (look em up in the phone book) but that's a really slim chance. other wise... I'm gonna put you on my watch list... if you'll post how big of an area you need to be cleaned... do you live in a town house appartment or a house... about the size of the room i can give you a price range... so you know when you start calling around you won't get hosed :D
I hope you get this fix take care!

Steam clean the carpet and try some frebreeze... if that doesn't help you could have mold growing in the padding under the carpet... then you will need to replace it.
