The Toro Personal Pace self propelled system is the
best I've found in 20+ years of mowing. You don't have a gear
shift to have to fool with. When you walk forward with it, the handle pushes forward and engages the clutch to the wheels and it goes forward. When you stop walking, the forward
motion of the mower disengages the clutch and the wheels stop
moving. Whatever speed you walk, determines a dynamic
equilibrium between you and the rotational speed of the wheels.
I got a 6HP for about $400 4 years ago.

Usually the sales people at your local large appliance store should be able to help you find what you are looking for. Try Sears; Their sales associates are helpfull and knowledgable about the produts they sell.
