The standard advice you get around here in this situation is to trample your shyness, go for broke, and expose yourself, never mind the consequences. I think a lot of these answers are wishful thinking, people saying what they wish they could do but aren't brave or foolhardy enough to actually do themselves.

I've been around the block enough times to know reticence isn't always a curse. Instead of worrying about ratcheting this relationship up with big scenes like you see in movies, I think you should concentrate on ratcheting up the relationship in small steps by trying to get to know each other better. You might find out that on closer inspection he's not all that great. And if he remains attactive on closer inspection, your interest will send the message that you like him without the pressure of a big scene.

One detail that gives me pause is that two grades is a big difference at your age. A lot of guys going into tenth grade just aren't going to be interested in someone who's not yet in high school. That's not a reflection on you, just a reality of life.

I would let the crush continue. Speaking from experience, it's hard dating someone that much older. Thier mind is on something that you don't want to get involved in. Don't put yourself in that situation. Even boys that go to church aren't angels. Find somebody closer to your grade. You avoid a lot of heart ache that way.
