The native language is a variation of Portugese...there are some similarities to Spanish, so if you could learn either one, it'll go a long way in helping you to fit in. Stay close to your group, especially in the big cities where there is a lot of violence and crime due to the overcrowding and crime. Most of Brazil is rain forest...though that's been shrinking over the last couple of decades. Of course, the Amazon River runs through it...not a place you want to get lost in! Good luck and thanks for giving of your time and service!

Im from Brazil. Brazil is the best place to volunteer but not at night. At night if youre at the streets you can get robbed. Brazil is only good at daytime. It has tall mountains and beautiful sites.

Everything you need to know about Brazil, in English, you can find in http://www.brasil.gov.br/ingles/
Important: there are 27 diferent States and over 5.000 Counties. From Rio or São Paulo, very well developped were violence is a big thing (don't go out with watchs or jewelry any time of the day) to the smallest and very very poor Counties with no drinkable water or electricity.
