You've got to be kidding. The U.S. is the most gay-friendly country in the world.

Homohpobia has different roots:
1. Religion.
2. Misunderstanding.
3. Denial.
A minority of people use homophobia to cover up their own same sex attraction, hence denial. However, religion and misunderstanding are the two biggest factors fuelling homophobia.
Conservative Christians feel that the Bible calls upon them to speak out against homosexuality - this type of homophobia is fuelled by religious indoctrination.
Other people have misguided fears about homosexuals. These include the misconception that being homosexual causes HIV/AIDS - Some religious people enforce this misconception by claiming that HIV is "God's judgement against homosexuality".
Some people think that gays threaten heterosexuality. They think that gays can somehow convert straight people into being gay, and that they "prey on children". Some people think that the gay rights movement is causing people to "choose" a homosexual orientation over a heterosexual one.
There are those who fail to understand the variance in humanity, and internalise a belief along the lines of "well, I'm not attracted to members of the same sex, so therefore its not right for anyone else...." The same people also preach similar beliefs in other things such as food and TV.
The nature of gay sex disgusts conservative people. The conservative people fail to understand that not all gay people engage in gay sex, and that if they do - its behind closed doors anyway.
Homosexuality itself was removed from the American Psychological Associations list of mental disorders back in 1973. Even though this sounds like a long time ago, there are still people alive who grew up in an era when homosexuality was considered an illness, and a crime in some countries.
It will take time for homophobia to disappear. There will always be a certain element of it, even if a genetic factor in sexual orientation is discovered.

The US doesn't hate gay people. It just so happens that the PEOPLE in POWER are homophobes, so WE(US citizens) do not pass the ban of gay marriage.
Besides MOST of America are Christian, so...it's against our religion. But Hate for the most part, only describes those who are close-minded and sheltered from the real-world...some of us(Americans) mind our own businesses and let gay people be who they are...that's the way I see it anyway.

One day we will have Dolly Parton in the White House and she will paint it pink and we will all love freely.
