American people are like people anywhere, some great ones and some losers. Their politicians get them in a lot of trouble though ... but then, that is much like politicians everywhere.
The main problem with some, not all, Americans is that they think the rest of the world wants to be like them, which makes people dislike them. Some Americans don't seem to understand that the rest of the world really doesn't want to be like them.

Theres only one way for an unbiased answer on this. Talking to fellow Americans wont work. Leave the US, travel to another country, follow a different culture, look at the way the US shows itself to the world outside the USA and you will find the answer.
Truth is, some Americans are loud and obnoxious, they think theyre the best without a backup reason except that they can invade any country in the world (which is just a flexing of muscles which makes most people around the world disgusted) and they are quite racist against anyone that isnt from the same background as them, and then deny it. It can get quite annoying.
On the other hand, there are plenty of very chilled out Americans who dont agree with theyre own foreign policies, but even then there is a problem because being Westerners everyone is sort of "Ok" with what the Government does. The UK is the same in that we just follow the US whereever it goes. Then when people complain that the US is flexing its muscles, the inbred yanks say "Ok, well we wont help you anymore". Thats one reason why most of the world think the Americans stink. Hypocritical, liars and extremists, and a strange need to attack whoever says "Sod off, Bush"

Some people confuse the policies of government with the personal choices that an individual will make. Since Bush's foreign policy is certainly far from popular in other countries, people become critical of Americans, assuming they all support these decisions.
There is also a global backlash against globalization and big corporations. Many of the biggest corporations that do the most harm are American and this negatively impacts the reputation of the whole country. Related to this is the culture of overconsumption.
Stereotyping also comes into play. Americans are seen to be ignorant of the world around them which does not sit well with people of other nationalities.

I have heard it said that America was formed from the religious trash that the rest of the world threw out.
That the american land has been raped & overused & now america is sucking up the rest of the world's resources at an alarming rate.
That the indiginous people who lived in harmony with the land have been segregated & are being pushed to extinction.
That racism is born from the slave trade history.
That america is really sorry for being late in the first two world wars & is trying really hard to be there first in the third one.
That in the global war against carbon emissions, that america is THE enemy in the west.
I guess the question could be, what is there to like about the american?

I have heard that Americans have 6% of the worlds population but consume 44% of it's resources. The have nots want what the haves have.
Also the United States polices the world, At least to the extent of which it is capable. Maybe that is good; maybe not. But it is bound to lead to resentment.
Maybe Americans tend to get a bit uppity. Some people use what they think they have to be better than others.
I agree, "they are good people." Like any country. The citizen is just trying to live there life and just happen to be born where they're born.

Americans helped Britain, France and Russia in WW2 because America was attacked but wouldn't get involved before. But they claim to have been the heroes and apparantly they won the war, when Britain and France and Russia did most of the work.
They dropped the very first atomic bomb in the centre of Japan (killed civilians) because Japan blew up a military ship (killed soldiers) , which caused a lot less a damage to what the atomic bomb caused.
They think the death penalty is okay. They say murder is wrong but isn't execution murder?
They criticised Hitler but there was discrimination against the black community in America and in the American army. There still is discrimination mainly in America against the black community.
Ask yourself are Americans good or bad?

This can go into thousands of catagories, but from what people say around me is pretty much to do with: taking over land that was claimed by others. Slavery, the way everyone was treated back when the blacks had no right to be in white school or even public transportation. People have held grudges carried down from their ansestors to make sure americans go down in the long road. This is my opinion and Im sorry if its inacurate or upsetting.

Because Americans are viewed by much of the world as the worlds biggest gas hogs, loud, pushy, arrogant, controlling, polluters, and war-mongers to name a few. Reelecting the IDIOT and his entourage of supposed world freedom pushers has not helped the way the world sees us. This country does not practice what it preaches to the rest of the world. If another country came over here to liberate us from the control of GW, Big oil companies, and told us we could not have nuclear capabilities anymore, and in the process killed thousands of our people, would we view them as liberators? We must seem like a bunch of hypocrits to the rest of the world. I just hope some of the world does realize, all Americans are not like are controlling leader, and many of us did not vote for or support his actions.

People have to have someone or some group to project their own guilt upon. Since America is the most powerful nation and Israel is the Holy land, these two countries bear the brunt of the world's projected guilt. Of course, others are also victimized by this psychological phenomenon. That is where racism, xenophobia, sexism, antisemitism, and anti-Americanism come from.

I am sure that there are many "good" Americans, the trouble is that the rest of us don't see too many of them.
Some of you (admittedly, probably well under 50%) voted for the Idiot, George Bush.
Some of you (also probably well under 50%) supported his war in Iraq.
Some of you (probably well under 50%) believe that Globalisation is good for everybody.
I think the main problem is that so many Americans have NO IDEA what goes on outside of the USA; how much mayhem and damage your nation is causing, and you don't really care.
That's fine of course, but don't get upset if the rest of us don't like you for it.
