It depends on where you live. In the United States, for instance, you can have an abortion for *any* reason.

As to whether *you* should choose abortion, it is a very personal decision. Some women would do it, others wouldn't, and for still others, it would depend on the type of disability the baby is suspected of having. (Prenatal tests--like all medical tests--are *not* 100% accurate, so you could think you have a baby with a problem when in fact the baby is healthy.)

This is further complicated by the fact that it is almost impossible to know how severe a problem any particular baby will have. For instance, a baby with Down Syndrome could be very mildly retarded with no physical disabilities, or severely retarded with heart defects. A baby with a liver condition might need one surgery, then be perfectly normal, or may need repeated surgeries and treatment for life.

I don't know if this is a situation you (or someone you know) is actually facing, or if you are just "doing research", but I hope the above helps.

Do you know there is something wrong with your baby? Did doctors perform tests? Or is it that you are just scared? I am not sure on abortion laws, I personally do not believe in abortion, but that is me. You have a right to do as you wish. Having a child that is someway handicapped is very draining, emotionaly and on your wallet. But, they can also be very rewarding. Remember, your child did not ask for this. Do a lot of research, get a support system from family and friends. Only you know what you want or need to do. Also, if you find you can't raise the child, healthy or not, there is always adoption.

wow, i just read some of these replies, i'm shocked!!!! i am pro-life....here's the thing when i was pregnant i was told that my son if he survived an hour after birth was going to have this mental disorder and they suggested that the best thing i could do is abort!!! no way, my son is now a very healthy and normal 9 month old...if you don't want a child that is "perfect" because of a disorder(mental or physical) then put your child up for adoption...thats the least that you could do...and to the guy that said that life doesn't begin until birth, how in the hell do you explain the kicking and the heart beats? how do you explain the unborn child sucking their thumbs???
also, if you are not going to love your child because of a deformity you don't deserve to be a parent...its about loving them and caring for them no matter what..so what if its a bit more challenging, nothing in life is easy or will be easy and nobody is perfect...answer this, if your child was "normal" and wanted to be homosexual, would you disown your child because of his/her sexual preference??? i know i wouldn't....

If you were just wanting some physically perfect being, why would you get pregnant? Why would you punish the baby for not being perfect?
With both of my pregnancies the doctors recommended abortion at some point and I chose not to. I knew I would love my children no matter what and they would be perfect enough for me. I made the right decision and today I have three beautiful children.

If i knew i was going to have a child that was going to be deformed and handicapp i would spare it's suffering and pain by having an abortion.
Why should the child suffer years of torment? I couldn't put someone through that.
Most people that say they wouldn't have an abortion would.

I am for abortion

Tests can be done to see if the baby is OK....but what if you're given a wrong result? Abortion is wrong and a disgusting act of human kind.

Yes, you can if you want, but that baby did not choose to be that way, so maybe you should think about putting it up for adoption. Give someone the joy of having a child that they couldn't have on there own. It having problems does not matter to most people looking for a child.

Below are some websites to check out about adoption. Please think about it and research it.

Good Luck and God Bless!!

Its up to u, but i had a friend who was told her unborn child had many medical problems and would be lucky to survive child birth, and if they did they would only live for a few hours at most. My friend was given the option to abort, but her and her partner chose to have the baby. Their son was alive when born and only lived for 3 hrs, altho he only lived for a short time, my friend and her partner believe they did the right thing and have closure. Just to hold her son and comfort him for 3 hrs was a miracle in itself.
