I would think when you're more tired, because you're more likely to get an 8 hour sleep when you really need one. You have at least two cycles of R.E.M. (dream) sleep if you can manage to stay asleep for 8 hours.

It doesn't exactly have to do with when you're tired or not. It has to do with how deep your sleep is. People usually say that you sleep deeper when you're more tired, but from personal experience, that's not always true.
I learned a long time ago that when you are in a really deep sleep, you will have REM sleep, but you won't remember your dreams or that you even dreamed at all. But when you are sleeping shallowly, you will probably remember dreaming and maybe remember your dreams more. I know someone who has dreams but has never been able to remember a dream in her life! This probably means she is a deeper sleeper.

Less tired. Ever notice that right before you wake up you are dreaming? When you take a nap quite often you will be dreaming of the things that are on your mind, your recent thoughts etc..
It's possible to make you dream of something, it takes practice and is not 100% , but still If you are able to keep something on your mind you will dream about it.

Most likely when youre tired. You are only able to dream in the REM stage of the sleep cycle. A sleep cycle is about 90 min, so you are capable of have a few dreams throughout the night. When you do not sleep enough one night, you also dont get enough REM sleep. The following night, something called REM rebound causes you to have longer periods of REM sleep. Thus you are capable of having more dreams than usual.

I have read the thread of this question.
I must say, some of the things I read were some what disturbing.
I believe they are correct when they say you dream, when you are tired. All though, you do dream when you are relaxed, and can also dream if you been stressed out.
I think a bigger question some may want to answer is, "Do dreams have meanings to them on a subconscious level?"

Who knows... I seem to have them, regardless of whether I am extra tired the night before or not. Sometimes dreams are exhausting, like when I have dreamed I have already went through a whole day or ran a marathon, etc. And then, my alarm clock goes off, and my heart is still racing and my body feels like I have actually ran a marathon. lol I hate that.
But sometimes, my dreams are so fun, I keep trying to continue dreaming them, even when my alarm clock goes off. Kinda silly I guess.
Or sometimes, it was so emotional, I will wake myself up cause I was laughing so hard in my dream, or was actually crying.
Dreams are crazy, eh?
Sweet Dreams to you!!!

Try eating alot of carbohydrates like a bowl of pasta before bed and you will dream alot. Then try eating a bunch of protein before bed and you won't dream at all. I had the same question you had an this is what i figured out, for myself anyways.

i have found that tired dreams are much stranger and not as pleasant as restful ones but you always dream you may remember tired ones better because your sleep is more troubled and harder to stay asleep therefore you remember them better
