I see you have a lot of opinions out here. I recommend that you do look at the Notebookreview.com website that another user recommended but also check out www.notebookforums.com where people discuss real issues and how to fix problems versus marketing hype.

The short of it all is All laptops are pretty much the same. They get the job done. My only recommendations is

DO NOT BUY a CONSUMER machine.

You will notice that most of the major manufacturers have a Corporate version and a Consumer version. The Corporate version tends to be more rugged. I have a lot to laptops. Although I have Macs and PCs I do not have a MAC laptop.

I would stay away from the Sony because Sony is more trendy than sturdy. The best (most solid work horse) are my Think Pads. I don't know about Lenovo's version but they are probably pretty good. My Dells, are good but they are Corporate, not consumer, and my Gateways are excellent performers. Toshiba used to be good but you could not give me one today.

Now, HP.....Well, HP did not make good laptops until they bought Compaq and even then the Presarios were crap but the Armada were dang good.

Whichever one you decide on, Go into a local store - CompUSA, MicroCenter, Costco, Sams, Best Buy, Wal-Mart and touch and feel all of the machines that your are considering. Look for good solid construction and a good screen. Then write down your choices. Check Notebookforums for real problems, and then look for discounts!!!!

Dell's and Sony Vaio's don't exactly have the best reputation for being really good computers. Do yourself a huge favor and go Mac. I used to be a PC guy myself because I thought they were so much easier and more compatible and stuff but after I bought my first laptop computer (an iBook G4) I got rid of my desktop PC and haven't missed it a day since. Mac's are faster and more reliable then PC's especially in the notebook department. They cost a little more but I have never had to have my laptop repaired (knock on wood) and for all the repairs my PC had to go through it ended up costing double the price I paid for it. Mac's are pretty much virus proof and because only Apple makes Mac computers you know your getting the highest quality and any customer service type questions or problems go directly to Apple. The best part is with the new Intel powered Mac laptops they are able to run Windows and Mac Operating Systems on the same machine. Basically that means you can easily switch back and forth between playing your favorite "Windows Only" games to the more advanced "Mac Only" editing programs. So in essence since these new Apple laptops can run Mac and Windows you can use almost any kind of software. Its something to definitely think about.

Sony Vaio does not have a good reputation as a reliable computer. They have a long list of problems.

I recommend a workhorse like HP.

Go with Vaio, HP, or Apple (Power-book, Apple is the absolute best on the market, in my opinion)

Avoid Dell...my mother is on her second one (both purchased brand new) and she is still having issues

Good luck with the purchase, enjoy...

laptop computers can be a rather tricky buy at times, I would suggest that you look out for the cheapest and yet latest laptops on the market, the only way to do this is on what they call warehouse sale markets some of them are also online.

these warehouse owners have a service where they sell laptop computers to normal customers like you and me, however with very reduced prices due to the fact that they do not have as much costs as normal shops do.

one such website is :
