The catalytic converter can get hot if the engine is running too lean, are you sit and idle too long. The battery will go dead if the alternator is not charging it. Take your car to AutoZone and they will check the battery and alternator. You will need someone to check out your car for the cat problem.

It sounds to me that the alternator has failed. This will give you a flat battery and cause the engine management to malfunction due to the low system voltage and this in turn would make the catalytic converter get very hot because the computer is setting wrong parameters.
