In the so-called 'western' tradition .. Thales.

Somewhere around 600 BCE
He theorized that everything was made from water. In part because all life depends on it for nourishment.
He made some astrological predictions that came true...
He also made money in commerce heh.. the first and last philosopher to extrapolate from "nature" to make sizeable profits..

Of course it's arbitrary, he is just historically the first one in Greece to be known for his earthly wisdom of natural processes. He most likely had a connection with Egypt, and was influenced by Hesiod and Homer, that is poets and mythologists. All we have are fragments of fragments so in our conception of "him" we paint a rational man. When really that's all that survives.. is this "character" of reason.

A philosopher is technically a person who loves wisdom and the act of thinking through issues. There is evidence that Hindu philosphy is the earliest organized system of philosophy. Other eastern philosophies also claim a long history, reflected in later works. Thales is the earliest undisputed Greek (e.g., Western) philosopher.

I would say the first recorded philosopher would be Solomon... he wrote sort of philosophically, though he isn't typically thought of as a philosopher...

The first human to ever ponder the question "Why?"
WAY Before 'THALES' was even a concept in his parents mind...some unknown human (or an ancestor of humans) way before recorded history must have looked at the world and at life and asked him/herself "WHY?"
Thus, we really will never truely know who was THE first Philosopher.

If you can accept the Old Testament as history, you would have to believe that Eve was the first philosopher. It was her longing to gain the knowledge to be like God through the eating of the apple that had her eat it. Once they had eaten, they had to ask them selves why they were clothed.

I guess the first philosopher was the person who asked the question, "Which came first, the chicken or the egg?"

Great insights from others.

Having its roots in science, philosophy was born when man carved his first tool. Man is as much a carpenter or a teacher, as he is a philosopher.

Philosophy intensifies in us when we make the transition from believing our father is the strongest to God being the strongest. We begin to question our original belief, our true self, and start to rely on God to look after us just like our parents did. And, so it begins...

Who is going to save us from us, from others, and from circumstances? The quest to fully understand ourselves, our surroundings, and our universe, "philosophy," was born early with man, and it is born early with man today.
