The only band I've ever heard that built their sound and melodies around the bass was Primus. Les Claypool is the bassist in that band, and he is amazingly talented and original. Their best album is called "Sailing the Seas of Cheese."

Probably Grand Funk Railroad..Mel Shacher played a bass style that filled in the sound like no other! Paul Gray from Eddie & the Hot Rods was quite the same way...he had a rumbling style too!!
