The router and modem typically connect using a standard Ethernet twisted pair patch cable, which has 8 conductors and RJ-45 connectors on each end, but only 4 conductors are used, on pins 1,2,3 and 6, as there are two conductors for the transmit pair and 2 for the receive pair.
