My teacher said in a paper that I didn't understand what animal magnetism/animal guides were, but she never really helped to explain it either. On websites, it all means something different to different religions and people.

The term "animal magnetism" was coined by Franz Mesmer to describe how mesmerism (better known today as hypnotism) worked. It came to be a synonym for mesmerism and eventually was applied to the supposed quality that a hypnotist possessed that allowed them to hypnotize another person.

Long after this was all scientifiically disproven, the phrase lingered on to describe someone able to overcome another's will through sheer force of personality, before finally narrowing to the meaning as we know it today--someone who has a high degree of sexual attraction for others (often out of all proportion to their physical appearance)

It has nothing to do with animal guides at all.

Apples and oranges, no comparison. Animal magnetism is a metaphoric phrase referring to someone's attractiveness to the opposite sex.

Animal spirits are archetypical spirit beings that have certain qualities. For example, the fox spirit is a trickster, shapeshifter spirit, the lion spirit is protective, wise and guiding - they're not that two dimensional, of course, their personalities have much more depth, this is a very simplistic definition. Animal guides are these same spirits when they help a person. Thus if you had a lion spirit guide, he would help you find your path when you had trouble and would protect you in hard times, help you find the strength to overcome hard things and defend yourself and your own, etc.

Well its simple, animal magnetism is part of your personality so to say.. what is known as chemistry between two or more people (depending your likings) animal guide is like your totem, a protector spirit that takes the form of a specific animal.

Animal magnetism is the attraction between 2 people usually defined as a sexual attraction..an animal guide is the spirit totem that guides you thorough the spirit world on your mystical walks in the spirit world( like the native Americans). Your animal guide is usually given to you by a shaman after your first mystical(usually induced by peyote) journey.

Animal magnatism, brings that wild animal (within yourself) out! It makes you want to just rip off the clothes of your lover and devower him or her!
Animal spirit guides tend to make you decide on paths in life that your specific animal would take. so if your animal is a whale, you will tend to take path's in life that are close to the ocean and near other sources of water! Or a wolf will make you want to be near danger, forest, or take no prisioners in lifes great journey!
You have the animal magnatism that usually (but not always) rules your love life, and your animal guide that helps you choose life paths that will make you the most happy!
But that is just my oppinion!

Sheesh.
Okay, here's the real answer. Take notes, kid ....
"Animal magnetism" is a polite, kind of "early 20th century" way of saying "hot" or "sexy" ... it means that the speaker is drawn to an individual because of pure physical (as opposed to intellectual) desire. "Animal" in this sense refers to the sexual practices of animals, and was used because polite people didn't say "sex" in public, and seldom in private, either.
"Animal guides" are sub-gods (sort of like "angels" or "fairies") in some polytheistic religions (most notably those of Amerinds) who relate to the individual through characteristics of personality. Call them "totems" that can give advice, issue a warning, or influence luck. Some Native American tribes, as a right of passage into adulthood, required young men to go on a "spirit quest" to seek their totemic animal. These quests involved mind-alteration through fasting, exposure and drugs.
Many cultures have used totems - the Celts, the Saxons, the Inuits ... even the Chinese regularized their totems into the "year" animals.
That's the difference. Animal magnetism is about being horny, animal guides are about being holy.
Hope that helps.
