The average nail growth is 3mm per month or 3/32 of an inch. At that rate, you will not have long nails in two weeks time without getting acrylic nails. For the future to grow long nails:

1. water is the enemy...it softens nails so wear gloves
2. don't abuse your nails by using them to pick or pry things
3. don't bite your nails
4. don't pick or chew on your cuticles
5. rub moisturizer into your nails when you apply it to your hands
6. keep your nails short and slightly rounded
7. don't use polish remover more than twice a month
8. apply a nail hardener, but avoid products containing toluene sulfonamide or formaldehyde

Apparently the vitamin Biotin (B-7) improves hair and nail growth, those are both made of keratin so I suppose it either improves the quality of your keratin or allows you to grow a bit more of it than usual (bigger strands of hair or tougher nails, I mean).

What works wonders for my nails, is using a strengthening nail oil on them, and rubbing some into each nail, daily if at all possible. Solar Oil is great--you can get it at salons and maybe drugstores. The good nail oils are mainly made of sweet almond oil, and that by itself is good also, you can get it online or at a health food store.

I also think it's good to make sure you don't file your nails to be square or pointed, but rather a bit rounded. Square or pointed nails are more likely to get snagged on things. In addition try not to file them more often than each week because that will make the keratin a bit more damaged. I also recommend a softer nail file than the brown ones sold in stores (although you can use those if you're just wearing them down, and then going over the nail edge again with a softer file), they are pretty tough on nails. I love using metal files, and softer grain files (they tend to be bigger and typically come in colors-pink, blue, etc. They sell them at salons, I think at normal stores also), for finishing the edges of my nails.

Water weakens nails, when you do dishes, etc. wear gloves when you do, you can also put moisturizer on before you do so good moisture is sealed in (there are gloves you can wear at night that seal in moisture after you put on cream or lotion, you may want to try this only if you have really dry skin. I get bad dry skin in winter but Eucerin cream [not lotion] is enough for those really dry nights.) Nail polish remover is very HARSH to nails, all types, so try to avoid them if at all possile.

I'm not sure about nail strengtheners which are like polishes, they are probably hard when they dry, so they strengthen the nail overall. But they won't make the nail structure itself be harder or stronger, they will just reinforce the nail, more like support beams than thicker walls, architecturally speaking.

That's all I can think of right now. I have really long nails so I must do something right! ^_^ Hope this helps! :)

Take suplements. My nails were crap up untill 2 months ago.I started taking evening primrose oil, cod liver oil and calcium. It worked. They are long and despite the fact I have done lots of gardening they haven't broken. But i do keep a file, so if they chip i file them in time. It's supposed to also be important to keep the cuticles pushed back, but I am a bit lasy on this, do it now and again.

This is going to sound really odd, but my mum, used to tell me when she was a teen and in her mid 20's she used to use gelatin..packets form, just mix it with your fave drink and drink it down, and she said it used to make her hair and nails beautiful...

Or you could take multi-vitamins, that would work as well.
