Call the parents first, and have them come home right away and call the doctor. You as a sitter wouldn't know if the baby has had symptoms before you got there or what they were.

If you really think it is an emergency, such as the baby choking, not breathing or turning blue, child limp and floppy, child caught on fire, turned scalding water on him, etc. you would call 911 first then the parents. If the child had a temp over 103 degrees, started vomiting (not spitting-up) and didn't stop after 20-30 minutes, had diarrhea about 6 times, I would call the parents first. I really can't think of a time the sitter would call the doctor herself. A sitter should know basic CPR for children, regardless of age of sitter. If they don't, you are not ready to start babysitting.

I think it depends on the age, maturity and experience of the sitter. If s/he is able to make an appropriate judgment call, then s/he should call whomever they think is required first. Otherwise, if the sitter is not an adult or very experienced, and the situation is clearly NOT a 911 emergency, the sitter should probably call the parent(s) first and let the parent make the decision whether to call the doctor or not.

Try to reach the parents first. They know if he's allergic to anything. They will call the doctor. Make sure the child is taking in plenty of water cause it sounds like a lot is going out. Keep a bucket handy (vomiting). If it is a high fever, it has to be brought down (Children's Tylenol). Read the directions first.

When I babysit I always call the parent first. It is always important to call the parent becuase the child may be teething or have a cold which it needs medicine for that maybe the parents forgot to metion. Ask the parents and then they shall consult you on if you should call a doctor or not. If you cannot get a hold of the parents try a emergency contact or try your mom or dad. They may know a few things or simptoms about the child!!!!

They need to call you. No pediatrician that I know of will make an appointment for anyone but the parent of legal guardian of the child. Besides, not all illnesses require a trip to the doctor, could just be a 24 hour thing and has to run it's course.

Parents if the child is okay and not in great danger Maybe the child has gone thru similar symptoms and they already know how to handle it.

Of course if the baby is in danger and in need of emergency care call 911 first and then call the parents.

If she really thought it was an emergency, the doctor. Otherwise, you. Keep in mind (although I'm sure you're not the case!) there are abusive parents who might be the CAUSE of the problem. Again, I'm sure it's not the case with you, and it depends on how well you know the people you're sitting for.

I think they should contact the parents and let them know what is going on. Then, the parents can contact the doctor. Unless it is an emergency, and then they should just call 911.

I guess it depends on the panic factor in the situation. I would call a parent first, but if its really bad, the doctor
