I used to be a PC student myself but I switched to Mac. I am not an art student (actually I am a nursing student.) I use my laptop for taking notes, making projects (I have Microsoft Office Suite for Mac) and tons of other stuff (along with my photography and web design for fun.) I think you should think about and list exactly what you need your computer for. Laptops in general are a bit of a chore to upgrade so you want something that will last you a while and fits your needs. I like my iBook because its quick, flexible and because its almost virus-proof (as all Mac computers are.) And any issues I have (which I haven't as of yet, knock on wood) I only have to call Apple Tech. Support (not calling one company for the actual computer, a different company for my operating system and so forth like on PC's.) Below is a link to a page on the Apple website, it shows you why you should get a Mac and some of the new projects Apple is working on for Mac. Good luck!!

Dont listen to the people who want you to go windows. I have been a mac user for over 13 years and know what's right here are the facts.
Mac:
-More powerfull
-easier to use
-immune to all computter viruses
-allso runs windows ( but windows cant run mac)
-out of the box brilliance
- alows you to easly create professional websites, movies, podcasts, photos.
- the growing education and buisinss standard
-verry affordable (pluss as a student you get a discount and a free iPod)
-apple is the one who invents new features that windows copys
PC:
-cheapest
-can play halo2 (Vista only)
-that's about it for PC (kind of pathetic) plus if you want you can run pc on mac universily.
I hope you can see the right choice here. I've used macs for 13+ years and know this is the best.

laptop computers can be a rather tricky buy at times, I would suggest that you look out for the cheapest and yet latest laptops on the market, the only way to do this is on what they call warehouse sale markets some of them are also online.
these warehouse owners have a service where they sell laptop computers to normal customers like you and me, however with very reduced prices due to the fact that they do not have as much costs as normal shops do.
one such website is :

It depends on what type of computers they have students using in the school. If they have Macintosh's then get an Apple. If not, get Windoze. Compatibility is the key.

seeing as you do not really know the difference between an operating system (Mac OS or Windows and Apple or Intel based), go for apple, it will look kewl, its easier to use, will cost you more and helps you pick up chicks.
