Assuming you mean pinging:

On a unix machine type "man ping"
On a windows machine type "ping /?"

Useless facts about ping:
Ping uses ICMP packets that are only designed to go to an IP address and elicit a reply.

ICMP is usually the lowest priority on a router and will be the first protocol dropped when a router gets busy.

Many firewalls and sysadmins prevent ICMP traffic as a security measure making it unreliable alone in diagnosing a problem.
