the area around their eyes are pointed downwards! this gives them the appearance of looking sad. imagine it in your head, if eyes or eyebrows are pointed up, they look angry, but if they're slanted down, they look more melancholy

I think it has a lot to do with their posture, and their facial coloring. Never thought of it before though...hmm.
