once metal is painted, then it has to be continually touched up and repainted and becomes a costly maintenance item, and not an easy place to build a scaffold. Whereas leaving the metal bare will last and retain it's look for a very long time.

Because it's made of metal. The copper statue, dedicated on October 28, 1886, commemorates the centennial of the United States and is a gesture of friendship between the two nations. The sculptor was Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, and Gustave Eiffel, the designer of the Eiffel Tower, engineered the internal supporting structure. The Statue of Liberty is one of the most recognizable icons of the U.S. worldwide, and, in a more general sense, represents liberty and escape from oppression. The Statue of Liberty was, from 1886 until the Jet age, often the first glimpse of the United States for millions of American immigrants after ocean voyages from Europe.

Because it is a statue.....it's cast in copper. You don't paint statues.

In the early '80s it was renovated. There was a huge advertising campaign for it, and every American citizen was invited to send in $1 to help pay for the cleaning and restoration. I sent in my dollar.

They'll do it again someday.
