strech! I know it hurts, but all dancers go through it. the best strech to do is called frog, if u know what butterfly is(putting ur legs in a diamond shape) do that backward aka lying on your belly and legs behind you. Also do backwards splits. Lean up against the couch and instead of your legs being straddled in front of you do it in back. PS-try just putting ur legs in front of you and reaching as far as you can.

Getting your flexibility level up is not too hard. Just sit on the floor, straddle your legs, put a book on the ground (or watch TV) and stretch forward. There are a lot of ways to stretch incorrectly, so make sure you look for that kind of stuff online before you do anything too extreme. It shouldn't hurt too badly, so don't just deal with a lot of pain trying to stretch further. In any position, stretch further and further UNTIL it hurts. There should be a minor discomfort as your muscles are being worked a little bit beyond their normal level, but it shouldn't HURT badly... if it does, you went too far and you need to pull back a little. Develop a routine and stick to it daily for about a month, then evaluate your progress. If you show improvement, stick to the routine and maybe step it up a notch or two. If not, take a look at what isn't working and come back and ask about it again.

I used to be the same, I couldn't even touch my toes, just to give you an idea of how unflexible I was. Let me first tell you that you can't expect to be flexible overnight and if you try, trust me, you won't be doing high kicks or splits any time soon. What worked for me, was incorporating Yoga into my daily routine. I took up Yoga classes and it has helped so much. Not overnight, but stick to it and it'll help you alot. Also, I think dancers do Pilates, because it not only tones, but also improves flexibility. So give it a go. However, Yoga is more practical as you can practice at home, Pilates you can also practice at home, but that's just the floor work, they have machines in Pilates. So, look into it. It'll work wonders, all in good time!! Good Luck!

Sorry, but you can't get the splits down in just a week. Toetouches and switch leaps are both very hard to learn with no dance experience and no teacher there to help you. Why didn't you start preparing earlier if you knew you needed to learn these things? For splits, warm up until you're sweating lightly and go into the splits as far as you can and hold it for 2-3 minutes. Then do the other leg in front and the middle splits.

Stretch. Doesn't matter how, if it hurts you're doing the right thing. Do it while you're watching TV, reading, whatever; just make yourself uncomfortable ;)

Heat will loosen your tendons and let you stretch more. Don't over-do it. A great way to get hurt is to think you can push yourself into becoming truely flexible in a month.

woah kath sounds a little scary. jk lol. you have to start out small. you won't be able to do splits at first but just do whatever you can. and it WILL hurt at first. trust me. I'm a dancer as well and even though i have my splits and stuff i still have to continue working for them everyday because i'm not naturally super flexible. all you can do is work hard for it and make sure you hold the stretch for at least eight counts and make sure to breathe while your stretching too. it helps!!!

there are soooo many painful boring stretches you can do but why do them when you can enjoy becoming more flexible? star a pilates class or get a pilates video and do it at home. its so relaxing and you feel so good after it.

stretches suck ;(
pilates rock ;)

well you're going to have to practice practice practice. it will hurt, but dont push yourself too far. dont make it overworking. do mild streches first, then as you get to the point where those streches no longer hurt, then go to a harder strech... you'll get it eventually! good luck!

Just stretch your muscles everyday stretching them a little more each day and before long you'll be doing splits and high kicks in no time.
