I pierced my ears myself, up high through the cartilage. It seems to be taking an awful long to heal. Does it take longer for piercings through cartlage to heal? I have the proper earrings in.

Cartilage piercings are more prone to problems and slower healing, this is because it doesn't heal in the same way as flesh. I have 3 cartilage piercings and they all took in between 4 months to 1 year to heal.

1) Wash your hands thoroughly before cleaning or handling any piercing, especially if the piercing is ?fresh?, or experiencing complications.

2) The best and simplest kind of cleaning solution is Saline solution, which is 99% sterile water and 1% pure salt (SodiumChloride). Saline can be purchased at a Chemist, a Pharmacy or made at home. If you make saline at home then you will need to boil some water in a clean pot or pan, pour the freshly boiled water into a container with a lid and then add less than ¼ tea-spoon of pure Sea or Mineral Salt.
Use cotton buds to apply the solution to the area of your piercing and to wipe away any excess fluid or crust that has formed there. Try to make sure that your piercing stays dry.

3) you should clean your piercing regularly, at least twice a day and sometimes more if you have exerted yourself (i.e. exercise) or if it is hot and you are perspiring/sweating throughout the day.
Be attentive to the changes in your piercing. Catching signs of problems early on is the best time to deal with them quickly. It?s also a good way of making sure that you?re not over cleaning your piercing.

good luck

Cartilage piercings take anywhere from 6 to 12 months to heal completely. It just depends on your body. Try to avoid changing earrings while it is healing. I know that's a drag, but changing earrings just interferes with the healing process. Just keep them clean, and rotate the earrings every day so that the tissue doesn't adhere to the posts as they heal.

If you develop signs of an infection, such as swelling or discharge (I mean serious discharge, not just a few crusties), take the earrings out, and let your ears heal completely. You can try again later, but not in exactly the same spot.

I got a piercing done professionally and kept it in for about 2 years. It never was right. That was years ago and I can still feel a tiny little lump in there. This is contrary to what you hear, but
looking back what probably would have worked was what I think you should try: to take OUT the earring, nurse your ear with alcohol and cotton balls and soap and water. Let it "rest" at least one day per week and go from there. Hope it works. It's just about the cutest thing a human can do to jazz himself or herself up.

In general, piercings on the "soft" part of your ear take a month and a half to heal fully, and cartilage will take 3 months. That is a generality though.

I did mine myself too... It took like 4 to 6 weeks to heal.. I'm not sure if it makes a difference being cartilage.. But be sure to use a stud until it heals and everyday before you go to bed clean it with hydrogen peroxcide and twist the earring around...

The cartilage piercing can take anywhere from 3 months to a year. It all depends on your own body. This piercing takes the longest out of everything. It is because you are piercing through bone.

DON"T DO IT!!!! It doesn't heal there, or anywhere on the ear for that matter, if you have a hole there it will stay there.
