I have an unlocked GSM phone that I have used in Europe successfully. I am wondering if I should try to buy a prepaid SIM card here in the US before I leave, or is it easier or cheaper to buy one once I arrive in Bombay. Will also travel to Pune so I want it to work there as well.

It is advisable and cheaper to buy a new SIM card in India for making calls nationally and internationally. You should go for pre-paid plans for call charges, as these pre-paid re-recharge has pre-activated roaming facilities throughout India.

You would require an identification to acquire a new SIM in India. Either your passport or yout local contact can help you on this aspect.

Airtel and Reliance are the top two private mobile service providers in India, besides BSNL which is a government telephone company. All the three cover almost the whole of India for roaming.

Your phone should either be dual band or triband to work effectively.

India has the an excellent competition in the GSM mobile phone industry. There are many service providers in the Indian market. The Mobile phone tarrif in India is the cheapest as compared to any other part of the world. You should definitely opt for an Indian SIM Card as it will be cheaper and give you a much beter connectivity in India.
The roaming services are also quite good, where Service providers like AIRTEL who have an All India presence offering you optimum connectivity at cheapest rates.
