Iggy & The Stooges. MC5. New York Dolls. The Sex Pistols. The Damned. Sham 69. UK Subs. The Exploited. The Undertones. Stiff Little Fingers. Dead Kennedys.

But no punk band has ever been as good as The Clash. Listen to London Calling and prepare to have your world changed.

Start with the early east coast bands like Minor Threat and Bad Brains. West coast Earlie's like Angry Samoans and Circle Jerks. Work up to Fugazi who I think is the best "Punk" band ever. Realize "punk" is much more than a fast 3 chord progression. There is thought, hate, love, anger, and the want for change that makes punk music great. This crap today is embarrassing. Fall out boy is not punk, they would tell you that. Don't try to categorize music to much its boring.

The Clash.
And I don't really know if they qualify as punk, but try and listen to Lagwagon and Authority Zero.
