I mean something huge and awful, like someone you know dies, or there's a national emergency, like 9/11. How do you keep from losing your head?

Just breath and remember that it's all going to work its self out...no point in freaking out..you won't be able to help anyone if you have to be taken care of.

I find denial to be my first reaction. It gives me time to sort things out and realize the truth later, when I can really deal with it. May not be the best plan, but it's what I do rather than lose all my sanity. I've survived many, many catastrophes in my lifetime so far, and it does make one stronger each time. But staying "calm" is almost impossible for most folks when trauma hits. It's just human nature to react.

Personally I stay calm by meditating upon the catastrophe. I consider all other outcomes and if it could have been worse I feel content (though I'm not one to panic)

Talk to someone. I think if you speak with people about what you feel it will help you keep your head calm. Or whatever it is that you do to make yourself feel grounded, do it. A walk, a swim, bike ride, horse ride, etc.. I lost my dad adn brother, all before I was in my 30s, and I know how it feels...

YOU DO WHAT ANYONE WOULD PROBABLY DO: YOU IMMEDIATELY SURROUND YOURSELF WITH THE MOST SUPPORTIVE PEOPLE YOU CAN POSSIBLY FIND FROM PERSONAL FRIENDS, TO ORGANIZATIONS, TO SUPPORT GROUPS, TO A FRIENDLY, SMILING BUS DRIVER TO THE WAITRESS WHO KNOWS YOU'RE GOING THROUGH GOD KNOWS WHAT TO YOUR BEST FRIEND IF AVAILABLE, PLUS YOU CALL HELP LINES ON THE PHONE AND IN SHORT, YOU FLOOD YOURSELF WITH ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING WHICH WILL REAFFIRM IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS THAT YOU ARE LOVED AND THAT YOU ARE SAFE AND THAT SOMEHOW YOU ARE GOING TO MAKE IT THROUGH WHATEVER MOST AWFUL THING HAS JUST HAPPENED TO YOU. IN ORDER TO DO THIS, YOU HAVE TO GO SIT DOWN AND TAKE A DEEP BREATH AND LET YOUR WHOLE BODY RELAX FOR ABOUT HALF AN HOUR AND THEN YOU HOP UP AND BEGIN SURROUNDING YOURSELF WITH ALL OF THE ABOVE. I KNOW BECAUSE I (AT 63) HAVE HAD TO DO THIS A FEW TIMES. KNOW AHEAD OF TIME WHO GIVES A DAMN ABOUT YOUR FEELINGS AND START WITH THEM. KNOW WHO YOUR FRIENDS ARE. THEY USUALLY NUMBER ABOUT AS MANY FINGERS AS YOU HAVE ON ONE HAND. START WITH THEM. YOU CAN CALL THEM AT 2:30 AM. I AM SENDING YOU A VERY BIG HUG HIDDEN INSIDE THIS MESSAGE, AND I HOPE YOU DON'T HAVE TO USE ANY OF THIS INFORMATION FOR A VERY LONG TIME! G. IN SOUTH PORTLAND, MAINE.

Deep breaths, remember joyful things.

Once the initial shock passes, I'm much easier to deal with... ^.^

Stay calm; read the Bible & pray. Be with friends and cry. Let your emotions out yell scream--- just let 'em rip.

If you have Christ, He is your comfort. Yes, Christians mourn. Yes, Christians can be startled. But, ultimately, Christ is our comfort. Christ is our strength. Christ is our courage.

Also, since we know we have eternity with Christ to look forward to, we need not fear death. For us, death is not the end, it is merely the begining.
