Chlorine is a cleaner that is less harmful than others. They put chlorine in pools to keep them clean from all of the people that have been in them.

To control the growth of algae and bacteria. Other chemicals, like Muriatic Acid and Ammonia, are also used to control total chlorine content and ph levels

to keep the water clean. the chorine prevents the growth of bacteria. otherwise, swimming in one would be like bathing in a tub with a lot of people.
