I have cable right now but I live with my folks. I am moving out next month and have no clue how to connect my desktop to the internet. I have a VoIP phone and prefer it that way so am not planning on getting a landline phone at all. Any suggestions as I am technologically challenged?

Go through your cable company or get a wireless NIC and borrow a neighbors connection.

When you get cable hooked up at your new place, ask to also have internet installed. This will give you a cable modem and 24/7 internet access at a much faster speed than dial-up.
This is probably the easiest way/

You can get high speed internet through the cable company. You can even get it through a satellite dish such as Direct TV.
