My computer is running really slow and there are some errors on some files. I was trying to run Scan Disk and I got a message saying "Scan Disk has started 10 times, do you want to continue?" I tried to continue but it wouldn't run. The blue line that shows it is checking files would not even run all the way. Is there anything I can do to fix this? Thank you for your help.

Previous answers have advised you to go into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key as the pc boots up. I'd just like to add a bit here.
Once in Safe Mode, click on Start, then Run, then type in "CMD" (without the quotes) and hit Enter. That will give you a command line. At that line, type in "CHKDSK /F" (again, without the quotes). That runs the Check Disk utility, and the F instructs the utility to fix any problems with the disk.
When that's done, and while still in Safe Mode, then do a Defrag of the drive. When that's done, reboot into regular Windows again. That should fix the problem. Good luck.

If your hard drive is too full (to check, open My Computer, right-click on c:\ disk, properties, and blue space is used space), you cannot run the disk defragger. I'm not sure if the ScanDisk would have the same problems. If this is the case, you will have to remove as many unnecessary files as you can until the defragger will work. I believe the required free space is 15%, but I'm not certain.

You have programs running in the background!!
Close all your programs (next to the clock), and try again.
