bigrob is halfway onto it: in theory we do have a free press. but look at who the press must ultimately cater to: who pays the bills? advertisers and their agendas. many times it's happened where a company has been displeased and pulled their advertising (read: dollars) from a media outlet due to displeasure with an editorial position, or a stance. local outlets often must echo their parent company's official 'position' for or against certain candidates, or propositions.
understandable, yes, but not fair, and certainly not "free" as envisioned in the term "freedom of the press". some of the most cutting edge journalism occurs in underground or independent news sources. ironically, those are the ones with the least exposure to the general public. they DO make their voices heard via blogs and the net, but if the powers that be have their way, eventually the internet would go the way of cable tv: pay as you go, highest bidder=most bandwidth= better net connections. don't scoff, it's being proposed already:http://www.startribune.com/535/story/458590.html
our freedom of access to information is SURELY in jeopardy. and our fearless leader is leading the way.

Free, yes. Credible, honest, objective--not for the most part. Seems like mostly left-wing ideology indoctrination attempts. Always pushing their agendas.

In theory yes, in practice...something seems lacking...the secrecy we have witnessed by the current administration has left me wondering personally.
