how can people agree with equal rights and not agree with same sex marriage? i believe the problem is fear. they don't like what they don't understand. if this country can say we are free, then why do we have all these "rules" that are just there for the sake of paper? if you want to be ignorant, do it on your own time, not when it is dealing with someone else's rights. straight, gay, bisexual, if you cut them do they not bleed? quit trying to run everyone else's life just because you don't know how to run your own!! one more ? since when does the government have the right to take away a persons free will?

first of all, before you start bashing gays, HIV was started in Africa, because someone decided to have sex with a monkey..... and the whole adam and eve thing, well again that is a religious thing, and to have freedom of religion says i don't have to believe in god or jesus, or adam and eve, and while i am on this whole religion thing, where is the freedom of religion, every day in order to live we have to spend $ that the government makes that says "in god we trust" "one nation under god" what is that? i see no room for freedom!!

ONE QUESTION AT A TIME! You asked about equal rights and gay marriage which is really two issues but I'll let you have that one. Then you ask why people don't understand. You ask about the interpretation of the Constitution and the Preamble of the Constitution. Why do we have rules? Ok that is a question that I could go on all night about alone - ANARCHY! Bleeding - it's a health question. Technically "I" don't run anyone else's life - I influence a few others but that's me feeling optimistic.
And the last one - I will answer...The government has the OBLIGATION to take away what YOU are CALLING 'free will' when it infringes on the laws designed to maintain a society that is generally considered the best in the world. Also, the government has the right (we gave it to them and insist on giving them more and more power each day) to determine where one person's rights end and the next person's rights begin. Does a person have the "RIGHT" to have sex with another person even if that second person does not want to have sex with the first? NO it's called rape. Do you have the right to drive as fast as you want all the time? No that is why they have speed limits to protect the others on the road. Again I could go on and on about all of these questions...
And for the record, I'm a republican because I believe in less government and more self determination and personal rights to freedom - of things like right to bear arms, etc. Republicans are historically for less government. I would think more gay people would be republicans, as the liberals are trying to create more laws that amount to a socialist society.
Oh, and I am for Gay marriage because I too believe (because of my experiences of my gay friends and of what I've learned over the years) that it is biological for most people at least. If heterosexuals can mess up the institution of marriage - 50% divorce rate - then why not let homosexuals take a shot at it.
Next time ask 1 question.

Well the way I look at it is that there is something wrong with a person that would cause them to be gay. Whether it's something they are born with or a choice that they make, something needs to be done about it. If a person is born with a mental disorder or if circumstances in their life caused them to acquire the problem, wouldn't we love them the same but try to help them? The fact is that marriage is a sacred thing between a man and a woman. The way it is supposed to go is a man and woman fall in love, get married, and then have children. Whether you are religious or not, I'm sure you understand we are not all the same sex and there is a reason for that. I don't think gays should be hated, but pitied. I believe that it is a serious problem and we should be trying to figure out what really causes it and what can be done to stop it, not justify it or discriminate against it.

No one says that gay couples shouldn't be together - the issue is whether or not they should be able to enter into a legal marriage. Marriage is and has been defined as a relationship between a man and a woman. Marriage has always been traditionally a sacred thing shared between a man and a woman.
Why should the definition of marriage have to change now? I don't mind gay people or their freedom to choose to be together, but I don't think we should be forced to destroy or change current laws and traditions in the process. The government will never be able to make everyone happy because everyone has different opinions and beliefs about everything - all they can do is try to appease everyone at best.

im all for same sex marriage!!!! It states right in the constitution that we the people have the right to happiness, so why should that basic right be denied to some people because they were born with different sexual urges than those who are old fashioned or close minded? It's like my friend says "if you don't like same sex marriage, don't get one". And as for whoever defined marriage as a union between a man and woman only defined it as such because most likely when it was defined being gay or bisexual made a person an abomination. I think marriage should be redefined to a union between two people that love each other. And as for the religious aspect of why people think same sex marriage should be illegal, i am a catholic but it is my belief that even God accepts homosexuality and bisexuality. These people were born that way and therefore, if what the Bible says is correct, that mean God made them that way. And another thing, if God is supossed to be perfect and even better than man, that would mean he also accepts it because man can accept it. Oh and you might want to check, i think today's, nespaper, the ammendment that was supposed to ban same sex marriages didn't pass!!!YAY!!!

If you want to hear from ignorant people just read most of what these people are saying above this. Same sex marriage must never be allowed..NOT for the sake of making rules but there are reasons why we don't have same sex marriage in most States. I know some short sighted people will say :Don't tell me what to do..etc. Well..we have laws that say you can't marry a dog or a cat..or marry your Mother or your Father, or your own sister or brother..why?
Because we are "ONE nation under God" for one. Also because the homosexual life-style brings disease because of it's filthy life-style of perversion..it goes against nature..like it or not the HIV started by the "community" in the bath houses of San Fransisco in the early 1980's..they too said "don't tell us what to do"..but the world is suffering because of their "CHOICES"..we all pay because gay people who are mentally ill. The gay life-style has cost the world millions of innocent lives and will continue unfortunately. The gay community always Say's:don't tell us how to live..but we all pay..they demand the tax payers pay billions into curing the disease they started!...just think about it with an OPEN mind!
YOU may don't believe in God..but that fact doesn't make it true. God does exist and it's his rules..sorry!
TRY to keep an open mind!

For the same reason you stated in 3rd sentence. If someone doesn't understand something, they're usually always against it rather than accepting it. Plus, homosexuality is rather new, just emerged from its shell no more than 2 decade ago. The government is full of people born like 4 decades ago, and their views and beliefs are still jammed in the past. If the government had a bunch of 20-30 year olds on its board, then I'm sure a lot of the rules and laws that they've made would be ceasing to exist.

Kristen, honey, you are forgetting one thing that married couples get that is very important to any couple : spousal rights and benefits!! If you are not legally married then your 'partner' gets nada. So if you want to raise kids and one person says home, then the 'homemaker' partner does not get any health care coverage, maybe not the kids either, depending. What about access to 401(K)s, checking accounts, credit cards, the list goes on and that is just a sample. One day when you get married you will understand.
As for same sex marriage-go for it! I don't get why all of the religious conservatives are against it. I would think any union between two people that love each other should be legal and celebrated. If traditional unions are ending with the speed of lightening, then why not try a new approach? Maybe same-sex partners can teach us who are not gay how to REALLY commit!!

Your right we live in a free country where majority rules and if the majority says no to same sex marriages then sorry that is just the way it is because it is a free country. It doesn't all have to do with the religious right some just feel that marriage is between a man and a woman. The government runs every ones life like it or not. We vote for the government and our representatives and they vote the way the majority in their district tells them to or they don't get voted in the next go round. Just like you have a lot of people who are against abortion but here we are its legal. You have a lot of people who are against free immigration but check your local news its happening. Majority rules in congress. See you at the poles if you want to change it.

I'm all for same sex marriage. Why the hell does everybody think gay and bisexual people are so damn different?! They're the same as straight people, only their sexual preference is different. If straight people can get married, why the hell can't gay and bisexual people too?! Since gays and bisexuals can't get married, then this country doesn't have equal rights. In order to have equal rights EVERYBODY has to have the same rights. This country is just too busy discriminating against people's race. religion, sexual preferences, disabilities, and stuff like that. It's really stupid that people think just cuz a person doesn't think or feel or look or do things like them, they can't have the same rights or privileges. This whole gay marriage thing is messed up!

How interesting ---- I have listened, read and talked to a lot of people about the issues you have mentioned --- I hear a lot of people supporting same sex marriages - gay rights and the rest.... funny thing is when I ask for help taking care of AIDS or terminally ill patients --- the supporters don't show up and help out....
Government can't take away free will --- when the government presses too hard the people revolt --- history shows that.
