I think it's to encourage people to contribute some answers rather than asking questions only. Asking questions without answering any might be perceived by some as taking without giving, although I don't really agree - if someone asks interesting questions they are contributing something by encouraging people to think. I also think the point system encourages a sense of gamesmanship which can be fun in its own right.
