He got 387 1/2 miles (I know this is grammatically incorrect but I couldn't resist for the way you phrased the question)
Remember when you do a word problem read the question, don't guess that it was written wrong and give the answer to the question is should have been.

16 3/10 = 163/10
(775/2)/(163/10)
(775/2) * (10/163)
(775 * 10)/(2 * 163)
(775 * 5)/(163)
(3875/163)

are you asking miles per gallon?
that would be 387.5 / 16.3 = 23.77 mi/gal
