Really depends on what kind of games you're talking about. The PC Keyboard/mouse interface is perfect for first person shooters and strategy games. Console controlers are better at "Platform" games and fighting games. Also the PC hard drive allows you to put much larger games on the PC... Game sthat take up many disks. This will be less of an issue with DVD based console games.
PC's have better graphics but there are a LOT fewer quality games made for the PC than the consoles. PC's are flooded with cheaply produced bad games. There certainly are some gems, but also a lot of junk.
Consoles have a lot more games in general and a lot less junk. Maybe just as much junk as a percentage, but with more games being available... More good games.
To answer the rest of your question... There is no "Computer companies beating the consoles" issue. The X-Box 360 is made by Microsoft.
Game makers are trying very hard to release the same game on the PC as they do on the consoles. Oblivion, Thief, Halo, Grand Theft Auto, Lots of game companies see the profit in either releasing simultaneously, or porting their games from PC to console or Console to PC... Or just developing PC and console versions at the same time.
The goal is not to "Beat" but to design games playable on BOTH. Thats where the money is.

they both pretty much even out. when it comes to mac computers though, you sure are in the down side of things. awsome graphics, but almost no games. computers are all different. you can own a computer with a crummy graphics card and always be complaining about how crummy the graphics are for your computer (even though there are endless games for computers) and then you can have a computer with a great graphics card, but a slow processor, so everything seems to take forever to load. (aggrivating!!)
consoles on the other hand, as the system gets older, you know what games are out for it before you even buy it, so you can pick or chose, "oh this console is a great pick because there are so many games out i like for it" or "oh this console is perfect because its small, it fits exactly where i want it to in my room, and all the games that are out for it are relitivly simple to understand" with new console systems, such as the xobx360 right now, you buy the system, and you have no idea what graphics are out for it, but you can walk up to just about anybody and tell them that you own an xbox360, and more than likely, if they like video games, they're going to want to be your friend.
the playstation 3, that hasnt come out yet, is going to suck. you buy the system, you bring it home, you buy a couple new games, and you play them right? you find out a couple days later (once the playstation 3 has been out for awhile) that your friend has a playstation 3 too. GREAT! because you bought a sweet game you want to show him. so you take your game, and you bring it over to play it on his playstion 3, at his house, right?
WRONG
guess why. its because sony is making it so the playsation 3 will register a new game as soon as you put it in your playstation 3 so from that point on, you cant play that same game ever again on any other playstation 3 other than the one you have. you can go out and buy another new copy of the game, and put it into your friends playstation 3, and play the game that way, but all your games cannot be played on any other machine on the playstation 3. do you know what that means?
NO MORE USED GAMES! NO MORE TRADE INS AT VIDEO GAME STORES!!
sony must hate us. they must. as far as i'm concerned sony really messed this up. i wont be buying a playstation 3. they can kiss my butt.
so in that way, any computer is alot better than a playsation 3. no matter how slow or crummy the computer is.

If you're going for graphics, it can be either depending on whether you have a next-gen console or have a great graphic card.
As for the games, there are pc versions of most good games but they are often released late and if you dont have a good graphic card it would lag a lot on pc versions of next-gen console games.
So for next-gen games, the consoles will be better although it will cost a lot to buy the console itselt.
Computer company wont be able to do much about this cuz the ppl just need to buy the good graphic cards.
If you're talking about current-gen games, the pc has a lot of them and you can play them with okay graphics so pc is better.

Well for me Ps2 is better, there tend to be more RPGs and SRPGs games for Playstation 1 & 2 than for the PC. And Ps2 games can stand out on their own, with massive epic story lines and stuff.
PC have a few epic storyline games like warcraft, but it just feels different when weilding a joystick than clicking a mouse. The feeling is just not there.

i think the consoles have better games because it is designed to play good games plus you cant get viruses from downloading games on a console, but a computer can get viruses and it is not specifically designed for games
