Well, there are like speaking accents: American people speak English a certain way versus British people speak English a certain way versus French people speak English a certain way.

Or, in reference to music, accent marks (shaped like this: >) under or above a note indicate that you should emphasize that note a little louder- put a "punch" in it, so to speak.
