Because it shows basic family values (which used to be a cornerstone of this country) and a) makes people reminisce about their childhood's with fondness or b) wish they didn't have such screwed up families and their family/life was more like that. I think it's the simplicity of it that makes it so great--before people got too busy doing everything they do now to appreciate & enjoy the people/things around them instead of rushing around all of the time.

You said it right. All the above are the reasons why the show has been so successful. I have always told my friends that I think the biggest reason is because the characters are so deep and well developed. They spent so much time giving background to each and every character (even the minor ones) that they seem real.

A good example, in one example they needed to have Aunt Bee and Opie leave the house (for some reason) rather then just make them walk out of the scene with some one line reason, they developed an entire scene explaining about Bee’s friend saw an ant under the stove so she decided to move and clean under stove. In the process, she threw her back out. Aunt Bee was taking soup over to her and Opie was going over to collect the ants for an ant farm. What other show that you can think of would have given such air time to such a minor detail?

That detail (at least for me) made the show come alive.

I think because it seems the perfect time. If things were that perfect now the world would be such a better place. I love that show and i actually watch it 2 times back to back every weeknight. I LOVE Andy , Barney and the entire cast.

Definately Don Knots! If you love him, you should see the movie The Incredible Mr. Limpit (I think that's how it's spelled!). It's really great! Also, probably because it's a wholesome type show, you know what I mean? Where nothing really bad happens. It's so much different than the world today. Maybe that's why we all can't stop watching it!

Because it's what we all long for - simpler times of innocense - when we could run to town and not worry about locking the doors - where everyone knew everyone in town and everyone watched out for each other - before sex, drugs and rock n roll - actually - my generation messed it all up! Sorry - I am hoping future generations will fix it!
