If you are coming directly from China, speak with the consulate's office before you leave. Many countries arrange VUSA travel programs for foreign visitors; you purchase a normal ticket to the US (I believe it has to be on an American-based airline though) and purchase VUSA vouchers for all your flights within the US. The VUSA vouchers are usually a lot cheaper than standard tickets, and are designed for a traveller who wants to visit a lot of cities in a row, instead of a lot of round-trips.

I'd recommend doing the West Coast first with a stop in Los Angeles because that's a major international hub; it will be easy to find a flight going from China to LA, plus LA is just a fun place to visit. Then go to Las Vegas (can even take bus or train), then Texas. From Texas hop on over to the East Coast, see the Carolinas, and while you're on the East Coast check out Washington DC, New York and/or Miami. Then back to LA and back to China.

This is a good route because you're going pretty much in order, taking shorter flights instead of sitting on planes all day long.

Other cities you may want to check out while you are here: New Orleans (it's still recovering from the hurricane but nonetheless a great city to visit) (visit after Texas), Memphis (wonderful music) (visit after Texas or New Orleans), and Chicago (a beautiful city with great museums, music, everything!) (fit this in on your way back towards the West Coast).

From China, it makes the most sense to start in a West Coast city like Los Angeles or San Francisco and then go to Las Vegas, Nevada. Airfares into and out of Las Vegas are pretty reasonable because so many people want to go there. From there, I would recommend going to Charlotte, North Carolina and checking out North and South Carolina from there. You can then fly from Charlotte, NC to Dallas, Texas. From Dallas you can either fly home or choose the California city you didn't visit on your first stop.
