A good book about poverty and micro finance would be "Tobacco Road"... it has it all (misfortune, failed family farms, abuse of police powers, etc) and presents it in a very rustic manner using colorful, down on their luck characters trying to rise above their downtrodden peers.

It's a real barrel of laughs, but was never set to music so it didn't make it to Broadway as a musical comedy as the Oakie version of Fiddler on the Roof.
