First off, you've got the Pittsburgh Pirates, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the Oakland Raiders (and you could even throw the Minnesota Vikings into that category while you're at it). Then you've got all the people pirating movies, music, etc.

But if you're looking for modern-day, "float around on a boat and raid other sea vessels"... yes, piracy is still live and well today.

Yes, they are mostly in the Southeast Asia. They are violent and knowlegeable and the crew of the attacked ship (cargo) is lucky to be left alive. I wonder how they can get away with it, but then I think of places like Darfur and say "oh yeah, no one really cares"

The film 'The Life Aquatic' had modern day pirates in it.

Here is a news story about an attack below:

Yes, there really are, and they kill people.
My mother was a cruiser and she warned off a powerboat full of pirates once with a flare gun.
Some good friends of hers were killed just a year or two ago
on the Amazon river by pirates. Anywhere there are expensive boats, there are pirates trying to steal stuff.

there are two kinds of pirates. one is created by movies back in the days of old. the other is the modern day pirate - people who make gains without any ethics or at the expense of others
