I know that there are both zinc and copper pennies from 1982, as well as different size dates. But it's not obvious. Any suggestions?

Hi. I'm a coin dealer in the Midwest. The only way to tell the copper from the copper-plated zinc without cutting into the coin is by weight. The copper coins are heavier. Here's an easy way to tell the small dates from the large dates.... look at the 8 in the date. If it has a smaller loop at the top, (envision a snowman with a fatter body and a smaller head), it's the small date. If the top and bottom of the 8 are equal in size, it's the large date variety. Hope this info helps.

Try here; it is the U.S. Treasury website on coins. You can try nicking the edge of the coin, if it is a copper-clad zinc penny, both layers will show.
