Hi:

You have nothing to be ashamed of. and you come to the right place. Mankind has struggled with mathematics for thousand of years. In fact. Did you know that during the ancient Egyptian time thru the Middle age up to almost modern time ; Most common people could not do addiction or subtraction much less multiplication or division? So to start you
off. Let start by saying that division is multiplication in reverse or a way of do repeated subtraction for example :

9 divided by 3 is just a way of saying how many 3s will make nine
or how many 3s subtracted from 9 will make 9 for example
in this case 3

9-3=6 (1) 6-3= 3 (2) 3-3 =0 (3) so 3*3 =9 { The () is counting how many time 3 is being subracted}

Multiplication and division is a short cut way to save time and effort in calculations by repeated addition or subtraction Let do a division problem

26/ 5

First set 5 / 26 with a line extended above the 26 . Now how many 5 will go into 26 without going over ( remember our times table ( T.T.) for 5 : 5*5 = 25 so try 5 and put it over the 26 and put the 25 under the 26 and subtract :

_5________________
5 / 26
- 25
-------
1

this give use a remainer of one we can continue dividing it out by droping a zero down and put a decimal point (.) behind the five
like so:

5.
_________
5/26
25
-------
10

Now how many 5s will go into 10 ( T.T. tell us 2 *5 =10) so

5,2
_____
5/26
-25
------
10
- 10
------
0

So 26/ 5 = 5.2 let check by Multiplication:

1
5.2 5 x .2 = 1.0
x 5 + 5 x 5 = 25.0
______ ____

26.0 26

So that is the correct answer

So remember you can check division by multiplication and vises-vera

Example: 1735 divided by 6
How many times does 6 go into 17? 2 times
6*2 = 12
17 - 12 = 5
Now drop the next number after the 7.
53
How many times does 6 go into 53? 8 times
6*8 = 48
53 - 48 = 5
Drop the next number after 3.
55
How many times does 6 go into 55? 9 times
6*9 = 54
55-54 = 1
Now there are no more numbers to drop. Your remainder is 1.
1735/6 = 289 R1 or 289 & 1/6

It is difficult to show this on the computer.
