I love tarantula's! They make nice pets if you like spiders! When I lived in AZ I would see them hiking all the time on the trails. Some were pretty big too! It doesn't really matter wheather you get one from the store or you catch it yourself. The tarantula is really pretty harmless to humans so you don't really have to worry about waking up wrapped in silk! Here's a site that has a little info on them if your interested! Have fun and enjoy your Tarantula!

Tarantulas are of course spiders, and thus to some degree dangerous. If you don't have small children, that danger is rather low compared to other exotic pets.
The main thing to remember about tarantulas is the care needed.
I included a reference page that pretty much explains it all.

I had a rose hair tarantula. She was a sweety. She would crawl on my arms and hands and never bite. Occasionally some of the hairs from her abdomen would come off on my hands and itch like fiberglass but not very often.

Not much of a pet. They are potentially painful, but for the most part, they won't bite unless you really screw with them. Just use slow movements. But again, not much of a pet.

I didn't think they were that harmful. I remember years ago seeing a kid who had one, and let it crawl on his face.
