Red ochre was powdered and mixed with water, that's where the saying "red skin" came from.
Warriors would paint there skin red so that Mother Earth would know that they belonged to her if they died in battle.
The other colors were made from wood ash from the fire, berries or roots. Different colors were made in different ways depending on the location of the tribe.
Individual patterns and designs were determined by personal visions, family traditions, or personal experiences which the warrior chose to celebrate or bring him strength.
