how to get organized and get rid of stuff I don't need. I keep lots of stuff for sentimental reasons. But the clutter is getting outrageous. Can you offer any suggestions? thanks :)

I have owned and operated a cleaning and organizing business for 17 years.Just like deciding to lose weight, you get sick of the condition of things, and want to change. My suggestion to those who cannot part with alot of stuff, is to take photos of the things that mean something to you,but have become clutter.Often times, the usefulness has gone out of the thing, but you want to be able to look at it especially if it has sentimental value.Your childs first bike,an old doll collection, your prom dress.Well...you get the point.Think of who may want or have use for them.Charities are always accepting donations, and it is a total tax deduction. If you are the type that collects old TV guides or empty mayonaise jars, then you need to seek counceling. You will never get rid of the clutter until you find out why you are hanging onto things that are no use to you any longer. You may contact me for organizing ideas.

watch Neat of Hgtv their system is pretty good. they set up bins labeled keep, garbage, donate and they go thru the items one by one and think about what use it is to you. you have balance of emotional cost of clutter in your life vs the space and clarity you get when u get rid of this stuff. there are millions of things out there to help you get organized with filing systems, labelled boxes, photo albums.
you can always take photos of the really sentimental stuff dolls etc and keep that instead of the thing itself and make a scrap book. after all the memories will always be in ur head :)
if all else fails keep the really sentimental stuff in a trunk in an attic :P

I would just start with some sorting bins or trash bags and make categories for the stuff. 1. Must have /use every day
2.Use occasionally could be stored neatly 3. Haven't used in months, donate to the thrift shop 4. Truly trash, ready for the curb!!

Good luck and godspeed!!

This is what we did with our clutter:

Got a lot of cardboard boxes from supermarkets
Labeled each one (laundry, cards, magazines, souveniers, etc.)
Started picking up stuff, and throwing it into its proper box

It was so much easier to just go through one box at a time, at our leisure, than having all that mess everywhere. :)
