I was just wondering if there is any possible way to set up a desktop computer as a server and then have computers on anetwrok log in to it instead of logging into themselves? and if so would this work with an apple laptop trying to log into a windows server/desktop pc set up as a server?

Yep, not a lot of difference between a desktop PC and a server, mostly stuff for performance and reliability. You can do the type of thing you describe with Windows, Linux, or OSX. Not sure what you are trying to accomplish but as hardware goes any PC should work. I have Windows and Linux servers running on old desktops.

It depends on what you are looking for here.

Windows XP boxes allow you to connect remotely to them, which means that you could have a desktop sitting around "enabled" for "Remote Desktop". Then another computer, like your Windows XP laptop, can log into that box. When remotely logging into the box, you will see a standard "Desktop" like when logging into that computer locally.

However, you still must be able to log into the Laptop so that you can run the Remote Desktop client on the laptop (which then connects to your server).

As far as I know, Apple cannot connect to XP boxes using the remote desktop.

To enable a remote desktop, right-click on the "My Computer" icon in your desktop or in the start menu. You will see a tab on the pop-up window named "Remote". Go to that tab and check the box labeled "Allow users to connect remotely to this computer". You must click the "Select Remote Users" button and assign usernames/passwords of people who may log into this server.

Well, of course you can set up any computer as a server.

It's simple to set up a central file sharing system.

As long as that's your objective it shouldn't bother the Mac either. They can cope well with talking to Windows servers. They can also host Windows networks, so you might consider using a Mac for the server (it has better security han Windows).

it is possible but more than likely you would have to set your computer up to run Redhat or something on your comp, and many many many many many more complex things.
