These are imaginary lines that go around the earth east to west or west to east. Like a ruler it shows a curtain degree upon the face of the earth. Then inside that area there is scale. So you can pin-point what it is your looking for.

west to east, latitude lines go across (to remember, the center latitude line is the equator). longitude goes up and down. (to remember the center longitude line is the prime meridian.)
to make it a little easier, imagine the earth. the latitude lines would go across the earth and longitude would go up and down.

Think of it this way:

The word "longitude" has an N in it, like North/South.

That means "latitude" must be East/West.

Hope this helps! :-))

latitude lines are the ones perpendicular to the Ecuador

remember latitude goes from 0 to 90 and longitude from 0 to 360 longitude comes from "lontano" in Italian "longe" in Portuguese, "lejos" in Spanish, "loin" in french, which means far and similars in Latin and roman that I do not speak, and so I do not know. In English you memorize it with longer, the "longitude goes longer". Sort of speak.
