i'm curious, forgive me but i'm british living in america so i dont know a great deal about guns. I'm curious about pistols that can be taken apart into several pieces, I was wondering, if they could break into their pieces if jolted., like, kicked out of the hand... how do you take it apart? and is it possible for it to break into pieces?

thanks!

If by "45" you mean the Colt 1911-pattern guns, then no, they don't just fall apart. The takedown mechanism on the 1911 is the slide stop. You must pull back the slide until a notch on the slide matches up with the end of the slide stop, then push the slide stop pin out from the right until the hook clears the slide. Then you can pull the slide stop the rest of the way out, and the slide will come off.

As for breaking it down, you can actually break a 1911 down to the individual pieces with nothing more than the gun itself and a spent .45 round. Every piece of the gun can be used to remove another piece further in the disassembly process. But for mere cleaning, all that is required is to remove the slide, then remove the barrel, firing pin stop, and extractor. Everything else can stay in place.

P.S. for those who have a 1911 - remember to keep your hand over the bottom of the slide as you remove it, if you don't pop the recoil plug first - or the recoil spring will fly across the room and park itself behind the heaviest piece of furniture you own.

(1) most hand guns will not come apart by 'jolting"them .. they have a locking pin of some kind to prevent this from happing. if the gun was not put together right ,then yes it could come apart if it hit the ground.(2) each type of gun comes apart differently.(3)some wooden parts could possibly break into. I had the stock of a shotgun to break in two pieces one time..I think this covers what you were asking about...

The easiest to dissassemble in my oppinion is the glock. Takes about 4 seconds to fully dissassemble, and about 10 seconds to put back together. It will not break apart if dropped, The chamber must be empty (unloaded) with no magazine (clip) you then pull two spring loaded pins down with your left hand and remove the slide with your right.

P.S. No one who knows anything about guns uses the word gat. That is a street term used by idiots. Also full auto uzi CAN be taken apart unless it has been welded. A standard uzi has no welds on the firing slide

I'm just glad to see a Brit taking enough of an interest to ask such a question, instead of waxing rhapsodic on gun-control...

Barring severe mechanical or frame damage, no: Kicks, drops, etc... will not cause a pistol to 'break into pieces'...

There are several sources, including on-line, which will give you more than enough information about assembly/disassembly, 'field-stripping', cleaning and maintenance, etc... A little on-line searching should answer most of your questions on this topic.

I'm partial to 1911 model .45 cal. pistols (I own a Kimber model, and I like it very much). I own a Glock, as well, and I concur with 011101 as to the ease of their dis-/re-assembly, and they are one of the most reliable and durable pistols on the market.

Hope this helped, David...

The only way a gun will blow apart if an overpowered charge.

Depends on the .45 how you strip it. ALL 1911 types strip apart the same

no they will not break if jolt it unless you have a really shitty gun. With an autoloader the slide on top should come off if you use the switch and/or button on the side of the gun usually these are hard buttons and/or switches to move. yes it is possible to break into peices....................................WHITH A SLEDGE HAMMER!!!
