Yes, I mean the book character. Not the radio.

I think he's likeable because he clearly loves Harry; he has put himself in harm's way more than once in order to protect Harry or even just to "be there" for him.

He is also a very tragic figure. Having spent most of his adult life in prison he's perhaps not quite as mature and responsible as he should be (compare him to Lupin). He's reckless and impulsive. I don't think he actually mistakes Harry for James, but I do think that in a sense he feels he HAS been given his best friend back. In spite of all of these things, he really does have Harry's best interests at heart.

On a side note, I think the movies have been spectacularly well done, right up until Goblet of Fire. While the movie itself was beautiful, it was extremely condensed and rushed (of course...the book was so long there was no way to get everything in). For the people who get the story ONLY from the movies, I think they're going to be slightly disappointed in the final three films..and moderately confused as well. One of the things that bugs me the most is that when the Order of the Phoenix is released and Sirius "falls through the drapery", the people who haven't read the books are going to think "oh big deal". You don't get to see (in the films) how invested and involved he is in Harry's life, and what a huge part he has in it. I think it's a little sad that film people (as opposed to book people..lol) didn't get to know Sirius well, and because of that won't mourn his departure like book people will.

I agree with most of previous comments. Sirius Black is likable for many reasons. What I didn't like about the character was his terrible oversight regarding the family house elf. After what Sirius went through, and all the years spent living inside his own head in Azkaban, you think he'd be quicker to spot an enemy. Guess he inherited a touch of the family class prejudice and self superiority thing after all. And it killed him.

I like sirius Black because he didn't give up. He was sent to azkaban for a crime he did not commit. He was allways looking after Harry, sending him presents and watching him. He made sure he was always okay. When he and Harry did meet, he risked his life for Harry many times. He was very helpful in many ways, like fighting the death eaters in the ministry of magic in the 5th book. Many people liked him that were good judges of character, like Dumbledore, Harry, and Harry's parents. He was friends with Harry's dad, and wanted to be harry's godfather. It shows that he is responisble and loves Harry.

He's tragic. Rejected by his family because he has different beliefs than theirs, always being misjudged because of said family. He really only has a close-knit group of friends, and in trying to protect them, is betrayed by them. And not just by Peter--Remus very well could have dug into things a little deeper than he ever did, but instead Sirius was left to rot in Azkaban.

And even after he escaped, things just never went well for him. He spent two years hiding in the wilderness, trying to look over a godson who at one moment wanted help and at the next was pushing him away. Then he spent the last year of his life trapped in his hated childhood house, being yelled at by a painting of his mother, still unable to actually help his godson.

It's all rather tragic, and I like tragic characters. They make for much better angst.

You are referring to Harry Potter Right? Black was a true friend to Lilly and James Potter, He was framed and sent to prision and tortured by dementors, that sucked any happiness out of his life, and when he escaped he still tried to avenge their deaths by proving who had really gotten them killed. Black showed Harry that he really was a lot like his parents and also gave Harry something to believe in again. Not to mention the numerous times he risk his life to save Harry and others. Black is a noble character and that is what is to be liked about him.

I agree with the other responses, as far as Sirius' true loyalty, and his sense of duty as Harry's godfather which got him through Azkaban. I think this coupled with his 'wildness' is especially appealing.

I think his transforming into a dog (my favorite animal) clinches his position as my favorite character!

Because he cares for harry so much he risks getting caught again and again just to be with harry.

He did time in Azkaban for a crime that he didn't do (leading voldemort to kill Lilly and James Potter) which would of been devastating on both accounts.

Then to be killed by your cousin Bellatrix trying to save harry and the prophecy.

Mhh... I like Sirius Black for it's very essence... I mean being called a murderer, traitor and being hated for so many people all those years...and he hold on and ...well from where I see it, he won his battle. He wanted to protect James & Lily's child- he did. He wanted to see Harry - he did. He wanted to fight for the "good side" - he did.

I like his fatherly role in the saga, too.

he's my absolute favorite character in the books because he clearly loves harry very much and he's very kind to him, he's described as rugged and handsome, he has an aura of mystery about him, he has a dangerous past, and what he does with his life is fascinating and dangerous.
