The "left handed" or "sinister" side was thought to be affiliated with the devil by ignorant people. As with many other things, people feared those who were different or in the minority.

People believed that the devil was underhanded or a lefty. If you were left handed you had "the devil" in you. Teachers would try to teach left handed kids to write right handed. Little did they know that a left handed person is a creative person, logical, and free spirited. How do I know? My grandmother and I was one of the devil "children"!
